Series: Serving Stories

Epaphroditus is not well known from the Bible. He was not a leader or a pastor, but a member of the church in Philippi. During Paul’s imprisonment hundreds of miles away in Rome, the church decided to send him supplies including money, blankets, clothes and food. In those days, the state didn’t care for the needs of prisoners, so supplies from family or friends were vital to staying alive. Epaphroditus was chosen to bring the supplies to Paul. On the way he became deathly sick, but instead of turning back or stopping, he continued on and arrived at Rome, probably still very sick. Paul was in awe of Epaphroditus - that he risked his own life in order to serve Paul’s needs. So, Paul presents him as embodying the essence of a servant of Jesus: an ordinary Christian with extraordinary influence because he laid his life down to for others.
